3. Switch back at Cikampek Trains "Harina" and "Ciremai Eksprs" (Bandung - Surabaya Pasarturi) switch back at Cikampek Station, since only a rail connected to the main line is provided toward Jakarta as shown below. Don't be surprised when your train starts to run at opposite direction at Cikampek Station. Switch back of trains are observed at other stations such as Kroya, Kertosono, Bangil and Surabaya Gubeng stations . |
4. Arrangement of Rails at Surakarta City Trains of an economy class originated from East Javanese cities turn the direction to north at Solo Jebres Station which locates in Surakarta City, since the junction of rails in Surakarta City is as shown below. If you come to city center of Surakarta City, it is more conveniet for you to drop at Solo Balapan Station in center of the City. The trains of economy class do not stop at Solo Balapan station. |
5. Connecting North and South Lines at Surakarta (Solo) City Some trains between Jakarta and cities in East Java run this connecting line between northern and southern line (Solo - Gundih - Semarang) to save time. |
6. Rails in Malang City There are two large stations in Malang city, namely Malang Kota and Malang Kota Lama. There is a deep valley of Brantas river between two stations and it was difficult to construct a bridge. Then, I guess that these stations had been terminal stations for northern line to Surabaya and southern line to Blitar for a long time ago. We can see beautiful rice terrace between Kepanjen and Ngebruk from southern side windows of the train. Trains roll and pitch due to curves of rail. |
7. Train Speed According to my experiences, the maximum speed was recorded as 110 km/hr at Sragen. Train speed is influenced by conditions of rail and foundation. |
8. Double Tracking Projec Double tracking project of Northern line was completed in May 2014 and Southern line has been double tracked in May 2015. ++Addition on November 21, 2022++ I casually have a time to get on a local line between Tegal and Prupuk. This line was constrcted for cargo transportation between Cilacap and cities along northern beach of Java Island. Then there is only 3 passenger trains for lond distance. PT KAI operates trains named "JOGLOSEMARKERTO" from JOGyakata - SoLO - SEMRang - Tegal - Prupuk - PurwoKERTO - Yogakarta and vice versa with ekskutif and ekonomi class coarches. 9. From Java Island to Sumatra Island PT KAI operates three isolated railway network in Northern, Western and Southern Sumatra. PT KAI started railway passenger services between Medan City and Lualanamu Airport in 2013. Wikipedia explained that the Southern Sumatra network ends at Panjang Station. But it is wrong. They operate passenger trains between Tanjung Karang station and Palembang city, but not from Panjang. The port of Panjang was an important as a junction between sea transportation from Jakarta and inland transportation in Sumatra island until completion of Southern Sumatra Highway Project in 1970th between Bakau Heni and . PT KAI still operates freight service of coal to Tarahan Thermal Power Station from Bukit Asam coal mine. DAMRI serves express buses between Tanjung Karang Station and Gambir Station. It takes about 7 hours. |
Long distance buses from Padang or Medan
to Jakarta may not collect passenbers
in
Rajabasa Terminal. You may use local buses between Bandar Lampung and Bakauheni ferry terminal. You can catch these buses in Rajabasa bus terminal located at northern part of the city or Panjang terminal. Car ferry service is operated 24 hours (32 trips/day) between Bakauheni and Merak, and it takes about 2 to 3 hours. We can get in speed boat (kapal cepat) to across Sunda strait in daytime (7:00 - 17:00). This speed boat needs only 45 minutes to across. You may buy ticket of ferry and speed boat in terminal building. Bus services between Jakarta and Merak are available in midnight. You may avoid night trip between Bandar Lampung and Bakauheni due to less frequecy of bus service. Of course you may use airway by various airlines from Raden Intan airport at northern suberbs of the city to Jakarta (CKG) and other cities. ++The fastest way from Lampung to Jakarta++ (1) To ask your friend to send you to Bakauheni Ferry Terminal by car (Bandar Lampung 5:00 - Bakauheni 6:30) (2) To use the first travel of speed boat (Bakauheni 7:00 - Merak 8:00) (3) To as your friend to pick you up at speed boat warf and to Jakarta (Merak 8:00 - Cikupa 9:00) Arriving time in Jakarta varies depending on road congestion and location to go. |

11. Between Cirebon and Kroya So as to connect line between northern and southern coast of Java Island, this section was constructed and completed on 1916. The southern coastal line started in service in 1887. Then the line from Cirebon might be connected at Kroya station. Train must run through pass around Patuguran station to clime up slopes for gaining 300 meters differece of altitude as shown graph below. Vertical axis: Altitude (m), Horizontal axis: Distance (km) Inclination between stations are as shown below.
Design concept for railway with steam locomotive indicated that the maximum inclination shall be 1.5%. Further, this line was constructed on the tuff (volcanic ash) which invite difficulties at construction of concrete foundations for bridges and other structures. Then, the designer might have difficulties to determine its routes. |
